  • Where has this podcast been my whole life? I grieve to have not found it sooner, but rejoice to know it now.

  • Why can’t you guys get through a 1 hour episode without displaying your TDS? They literally have to mention Trump every episode and we DO NOT CARE about your current political viewpoints Dominic! It’s in the comment section of every video we watch! Leave it mate! Please! This is a great show without that.

  • AI might someday be useful to make movies of topics that are impractical to make conventionally such as this battle.

Hmm I was under the impression Denmark didn't join Napoleons efforts until after the British absconded with the danish navy.

  • Sorry bud I'm gonna have to throw some salt into your Nelson love-casserole.
You say that 'the loss of ships where devastating' for Denmark bud the loss in 1801 where not severe for the Danes. The defense line where mostly made up by or unseaworthy ships, decommissioned hulks (even the flagship) and hastily build gun platforms. Only a few smaller ones where prizes of any note (the many cannons lost where a pain for the nation though). The Danish fleet where not in Copenhagen bud in Karlskrona (Sweden) in a combined danish-swedish battlegroup and did not participate at all due to unfavorable winds.

You state that the Danes joined France due to them being the greater threat. This is just pure nonsense. 6 years later when the Danish army where in north Germany guarding against Napoleon, England swept in through the back door and stole the before mentioned fleet while it was laid of for the winter. That's why Denmark joined the French.

Lastly Nielson in his letter to the crown prince threatened to burn the captured Danish ships with the crew onboard, funny how every single English historians always leave that part out.

Side note: only 1/3 of the Danish fighters where fleet personnel. most where civilian volunteers with 14 days of training in gunnery.

  • Offering a deal?????
It was a threat to kill the danes, he had captured.
Nelson had not secured the victory, so I don't agree with your conclusion. I've read the note (it's pictured in a book I have about the wars between Denmark and England in 1801-1814), and I read it as a threat to kill Danish prisoners.

  • Love to hear the other side of it however twisted it seems from a Danish perspective.

  • If I'm ever in a situation like this I will have ready a selection of appropriate phrases on which to call.

I can imagine Nelson practising them alone in his cabin.

I can also imagine his officers following his example.

  • Parker's orders were known to Nelson because this was an arranged battle, a skermish to absolve Denmark of any French blame.

  • Great talk. Realy enjoyd it.
See some commets from my countrymen here in Denmark, specific about young lieutanant Peter Willemoes commander on cannon float no. 1 in the battle.
Sertanly he and his men did more than expected of them, challecing the HMS Elefant and so. But it was only a small piece of the battle.
Offcourse the Britich would win, just a matter of how many casualties they were willing take before maybe continue the fleet to Sweeden and Russia (none of that came to bare when Danmark acceptered the terms with the Brittich).

As far as I have read, Nielson reccomended the Danish Crown Prince to give the young lieutanant Peter Willemoes a promotion, after the battle. But the Crown Prince told Nielson that if he should give all brave Danish lieutanants in the battle a promotion, there would be no lieutanants left in the Danish navy.
